Students at Massachusetts College of Art & Design had to move into temporary housing on Friday night after a sprinkler problem in the Tree House Residence Hall forced them to evacuate.
A spokesperson from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design told Channel 5 that all students living in the Tree House Residence Hall had left the building by 10:30 p.m. Students were notified at 9:30 p.m. that they would have to evacuate their rooms within the hour, Channel 5 reported.
The students are temporarily relocated to nearby colleges, including Wentworth Institute of Technology, Simmons University, and Emmanuel College, Channel 5 reported.
Contractors are working to get the sprinkler system back online, the college’s president Mary K. Grant said in a message posted to the school’s website Sunday. Students are expected to be able to return to Tree House on Thursday, she wrote.
Classes for first-year students are canceled on Monday and will be held in “hybrid mode” until Thursday because of the “impact” the situation had on students, the statement said. The Tree House primarily houses first and second-year students, according to the school’s website.
“I want to thank all of the students who had to relocate on Friday evening, for responding with compassion, grace, and positivity,” Grant said in the statement. “I know this situation has been far from ideal.”
Grant said there would be further updates on the Tree House Residence Hall on Monday.
