Inert military device found in Medford, police say

State Police bomb squad troopers investigated the item and found it was not a hazard and not improvised, MSP said.

An inert military ordnance was discovered in Medford on Saturday, prompting the closure of several roads, the State Police said.

At approximately 2 p.m. on Feb. 3, state police, Medford police, and Medford firefighters responded to Condon Shell Park at 2501 Mystic Valley Parkway in Medford for reports of a piece of military equipment discovered behind a trash can, Massachusetts State Police Director of Media Communications Dave Procopio said.

State police bomb squad troopers responded in protective gear and examined the item. Upon investigation, they found the item was a “practice round with no fusing system and hollow cavity,” Procopio said.

Police found no evidence that the item had been improvised or that it was at risk of exploding.

“All indications are that the item was discarded by an unknown person with other nearby trash,” Procopio said.

The park and west side of Mystic Valley Parkway from Main Street to Winthrop Street were shut down during the investigation. State police posted on their X account at around 4 p.m. Saturday saying that the scene was clear and the item was inert.
