Teacher struck by car in Newton

Police responded to an area of Newton where striking teachers were planning a rally Thursday. One person was sent to the hospital.

A teacher was struck by a car and sent to a hospital in Newton Thursday at the location of a rally for striking educators.

At about 11:17 a.m., Newton Police officers responded to the area of 100 Walnut St. for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian, officials said.

Police determined that a driver was pulling out of the lot of the Newton Education Center onto Crafts Street when they struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian was crossing the road and was not using a crosswalk.

Both the motorist and the injured pedestrian told police that they are teachers.

The pedestrian was brought to a local hospital. Police did not say how badly they were injured.

The Newton Teachers Association has been on strike for 10 days, often organizing demonstrations at the Education Center. The union was planning to hold another rally there Thursday afternoon. It is unclear if the two teachers involved are part of the striking union.
