Next stop on your Green Line commute: “Screech from the Heavens.”
That’s the new name given to the subway line’s Boylston station on a new map shared by the Norman B. Leventhal Map & Education Center at the Boston Public Library on Tuesday.
“At the end of 2023, we asked our supporters to help us out with a creative and collaborative map project: renaming Boston’s subway stations,” the center wrote. “For the month of November, donors bid on the ‘rights’ to re-name various stations on the red, orange, green and blue lines.”
The resulting new names run the gamut in their inspiration.
“This map covers it all—from historical references and neighborhood locales to imaginative puns and names that relay the daily experiences (or frustrations) of Boston’s public transit riders,” the center wrote. “We think they did a great job of capturing the spirit of each station!”
Among the historical references, Park Street was renamed “Burying Ground”on the Green Line. For neighborhood descriptors, Green Street on the Orange Line was renamed “Jamaica Plain Station” while Back Bay became “Boston Public Library Station.”
On the new map, Red Line commuters would have the option of getting off at “Escalator to Hell” (Porter) or “Tulane of the North” (Harvard) while travelers on the Blue Line could stop at “The Fish Store” (Aquarium) or “East Boston is NOT an Airport” (Airport).
The new map will be on display at the central library’s Getting Around Town exhibition through April 27.
