MSPCA is seeking the public’s help in identifying the owner of a Golden Retriever-mix who was found in Brookline last week in an “emaciated” condition.

A three-year-old Golden Retriever-mix, who they are now calling “Brooke,” was found in the area of Newton Street and Clyde Street on Jan. 24, the organization said in a statement.

Brooke was taken to Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain that afternoon and “not a second too soon,” they said.

Mike Keiley, vice president of the MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Protection Division, said the dog was in “bad shape” when she arrived at the center and had the poorest body-condition score possible.

“On a scale of one to nine, with one being extremely emaciated and nine being obese, she had a body condition score of one,” Keiley said.

Brooke reportedly weighed about 10 pounds when she should weigh at least 20.

Brooke has been stabilizing since being put on a refeeding program and may be able to leave the hospital early this week, Keiley said. According to a post on MSPCA-Angell’s X account, the center is focusing on Brooke’s recovery and “not taking adoption interest at this time.”

“It’s always hard to see loving animals like Brooke suffer so much,” Keiley said. “We want to know how it got to this point, and we need people’s help to do that.”

Law enforcement officials are asking anyone with information about the dog’s owner to submit a tip at [email protected], online at mspca.org/tip, or by calling (617) 628 – 5808.
