Police: Driver killed in Sherborn crash was going more than 70 mph in 35 mph zone

The car struck a tree on the driver’s side.

Police say a driver who was killed in a crash in Sherborn Friday was speeding when they lost control of the car and struck a tree.

The crash occurred around 9:21 p.m. on Western Avenue when the car, a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit that was traveling around 70 mph in a 35 mph zone, started sliding, Sherborn police said. The driver’s side of the car struck a tree, causing the vehicle’s roof to cave in.

“Attempts to rescue and extricate the operator were made but were unsuccessful,” police said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said no other vehicles were damaged and no other individuals were injured in the crash.
