A man who was rescued from a two-alarm fire last week has died as a result of his injuries, officials said.
According to a statement by Newton Fire and Police Department officials, an 80-year-old man died at Massachusetts General Hospital Friday after what officials believe was a heating-related fire at a residence in Newton on Wednesday.
The Newton Fire Department responded to 16 Lincoln Road at about 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 24, officials said in a statement.
First responders rescued two adults trapped inside the house and put out the bulk of the fire in about 20 minutes, the statement read. Both of the people rescued suffered serious injuries.
An investigation by the Newton Fire and Police Departments is still ongoing but has determined that the fire began in the basement, the statement said. Officials said the fire is not suspicious.
“The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but we believe it may have been heating related,” said Newton Fire Chief Gregory Gentile. “If you use a space heater at home, please remember to keep anything that can burn at least three feet away. Plug it directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip, and always turn it off when you leave the room or go to sleep.”
There was no immediate update on the condition of the other victim, officials said.
“This is a terrible loss for the family and a sad day for the community,” Gentile said.
