A 63-year-old East Sandwich man was killed Tuesday while working construction at a site at Brockton Hospital.

Around noon, Roger Porter was leveling gravel in an eight-foot-deep foundation trench when a skid-steer loader fell on top of him, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office said in a news release. He was trapped under the machine, which was being operated by another worker.

The DA’s office said the process of freeing Porter was “labor intensive for first responders.” Porter, who worked for LMA Services of Stoughton, was declared dead at the scene.

The state Chief Medical Examiner’s office will determine the manner and cause of Porter’s death, the DA’s office said. Meanwhile, OSHA, as well as Brockton and state police, are investigating Porter’s death.

Brockton Hospital’s main building has been closed since February when an electrical fire in the basement forced the hospital to evacuate all 160 patients. No one was hurt in the 10-alarm fire, but it left the building badly damaged. It is unclear when the hospital will reopen fully.
