Massachusetts State Police have recovered the body of 4-year-old Mohamed Abou Fofana, a South Boston boy who went missing at Castle Island Sunday evening.
A state police marine unit spotted Mohamed’s body on the shore of Spectacle Island at 12:29 p.m. Monday, directly across the water from Castle Island, an MSP spokesperson said.
According to state police, Mohamed was playing at a Castle Island park Sunday evening on the coastline, accompanied by an adult family member.
The adult — who WCVB identified as the boy’s grandfather — lost sight of Mohamed shortly after 7 p.m. and reported him missing around 7:30 p.m.
Family members told WCVB that Mohamed had autism and was not able to communicate with others. The boy’s mother told NBC10 Boston that he was energetic and had a tendency to wander.
A large group of police, firefighters, and other first responders searched Castle Island Sunday night, but the “exhaustive search” turned up no sign of the boy, according to state police. The search resumed Monday morning.
Mohamed’s body was to be brought to shore and transferred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the MSP spokesperson said. The state police detective unit for Suffolk County will helm the investigation.
