Disruptions to payment processing caused ‘chaos’ at Market Baskets in Mass.

Market Basket grocery stores across Massachusetts on Wednesday experienced service disruptions causing customers to wait in lengthy lines. According to a spokesperson, the disruptions were resolved around 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

After hours of disrupted service on Wednesday due to problems with processing non-cash payments, Market Basket grocery stores across Massachusetts are now fully operational, according to a statement for the grocery store.

“Due to a service disruption by a third-party vendor, some locations are experiencing intermittent delays in transaction processing,” Market Basket said in a statement Wednesday morning. “Through the team working together, we are confident that all temporary disruptions will be resolved shortly, and we apologize for any inconvenience to our valued customers.”

Customers reported waiting in lengthy lines at the grocery chain during the disruption.

“It’s chaos,” one customer told WBZ NewsRadio.

“I waited about a half hour to buy two items and the lines are all the way wrapped down the aisles,” another told the radio station.

Market Basket released an update Wednesday afternoon stating they had resolved the error at the majority of locations, and expected the issue to be resolved across the state by 6 p.m.

“The Market Basket Team has been working throughout the day to successfully resolve the service disruption caused by a third-party vendor,” the grocery store said in an email Wednesday afternoon. “The majority of our stores are now fully operational and we expect the remaining stores to be online by 6:00 p.m. this evening. We want to apologize to our valued customers for any inconvenience and express our appreciation for their patience as we have addressed the situation today.”

By 6:30 p.m., Market Basket confirmed all stores were back online and fully operational, according to the email.
