Two people have died as a result of a two-car head-on crash on Route 49 on Monday in East Brookfield, Massachusetts State Police reported. A third victim was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
State Police said the crash happened at the intersection of Route 49 and Flagg Road, and that they were called to the scene around 12:30 p.m.
According to State Police, a preliminary investigation indicates that a 60-year-old Fitchburg man was driving a 2021 Nissan Rogue traveling northbound on Route 49, and a 71-year-old Leicester man was traveling southbound on Route 49 in a 2018 Toyota Tacoma.
As the cars went through the intersection at Flagg Road, State Police said, the Nissan Rogue crossed into the southbound lane and struck the Toyota.
Both drivers died from injuries they sustained during the crash.
A passenger in the Toyota, a 28-year-old man from Leicester, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
There is an ongoing investigation into the crash by state troopers.
