Major water main break on Huntington Ave. leads to traffic delays as repairs continue

Water service hasn't been interrupted, say officials.

Wednesday night’s major water main break near the Prudential building in Boston continued to cause traffic delays at Huntington Avenue around Harcourt Street and Ring Road Thursday morning.

As of around 9 a.m. Thursday, a private contractor took over repairs, according to the Boston Water and Sewer Commission. All the buildings had water.

“Expect traffic delays as both Inbound and outbound sides are limited to one lane of traffic,” the commission said at the time.

The break was first reported around 5:53 p.m. Thursday night with a “leak in the street,” according to the Boston Water and Sewer Commission on Twitter.

Traffic was then detoured inbound on Huntington Avenue between West Newton and Harcourt streets. Service wasn’t interrupted, the commission reported just after 8 p.m.

Video of the break showed water shooting skyward, and soaking the street and nearby buildings. Some reported water shooting up as high as three stories in the air.
