Massachusetts State Police are investigating a multiple-vehicle wrong-way crash that lead to the death of a driver on Interstate 93 in Boston early Saturday morning, according to a statement.
Investigators said the driver of a 2009 Chevy Tahoe traveled southbound on the northbound side of the highway around 2:30 a.m. Just after the Columbia Road exit, the SUV struck two northbound vehicles — a Boston Logan Express bus and a 2021 Dodge RAM 1500 pickup truck — causing non-life-threatening injuries to those drivers, police said.
The SUV then struck a third vehicle, a 2018 Hyundai Sonata, also causing non-life-threatening injuries to that driver, according to the statement.
Investigators said the SUV came to rest in the two rightmost northbound lanes. The driver, who has been identified as Richard Crawford, 31, of Everett, was determined to be dead at the scene, according to police.
Two of the other drivers were taken by Boston EMS to Boston Medical Center for treatment for minor injuries — the driver of the Logan Express Bus, a 54-year-old Hyde Park man; and a 29-year-old Chelsea resident who was driving the Hyundai, authorities said.
The facts and circumstances of the crash, including why the SUV driver was driving in the wrong direction, remain under investigation by state police.
No further information was released.
