Update: Man shot by Burlington police has died

A man who was previously reported to have been injured following a altercation with Burlington police on Sunday has died.

The man was identified as 42-year-old Paul Courtemanche, according to a statement from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Burlington Chief of Police Thomas Browne.

Courtemanche called 911 at 12:08 p.m. Sunday, according to the statement. He said he was in a state of mental health crisis and was in possession of a knife. He then said he was unsure of how he would react when officers arrived, according to Ryan’s statement.

Courtemanche was still wielding a knife when came out of his apartment building on Baron Park Lane in Burlington, officials said. As he approached the officers, one officer shot him with a rubber bullet which did not stop him from continuing to approach. The second officer then shot Courtemanche with his firearm, according to the statement.

Courtemanche was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries, but later died, officials said.

The two police officers were transported to a local hospital. One officer sustained a minor head injury. Both were later released, officials said.

Meghan Kelly, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office, told The Boston Globe both officers were placed on paid administrative leave following the incident.
