Speedy delivery: Trooper helps speeding couple get to the delivery room

A Massachusetts state trooper helped two expectant parents get to the hospital just in time to deliver a healthy baby boy.

Just after noon on Wednesday, Trooper Jose Cabrera pulled a vehicle over after he spotted it flying down Route 91 in West Springfield at over 100 miles per hour.

But the driver had good reason for his excessive speed — his girlfriend was in labor. Not only that, the mom-to-be’s water had broken.

Cabrera immediately called for an ambulance and helped keep the soon-to-be mother calm. But all nearby ambulances were too busy responding to other calls, so they were unable to help the couple get to the hospital.

That’s when Cabrera took matters into his own hands.

“Trooper Cabrera, thinking quickly, made the decision to expeditiously escort the woman to the hospital in the back of his cruiser, with the father following behind,” state police said on Facebook. “He safely delivered (pun intended) the mother-to-be to Mercy Hospital and a short time later she delivered a healthy baby boy.”

State police on Thursday shared a photo of the beaming mom post-birth, with a smiling Cabrera holding the baby boy.

Within two hours, the Facebook post had collected nearly 7,000 likes and 365 comments; mostly well-wishers congratulating the new parents and commending Cabrera on his helpfulness.
