Man, 83, killed when Amtrak train strikes vehicle on tracks in Haverhill
An Amtrak train with about 80 passengers on board struck a pickup truck that was on the tracks in Haverhill, killing the driver, officials said.
According to a statement from the Essex District Attorney’s office, the pickup truck went through the gate on Rosemont Street shortly before 1 p.m. Monday, and collided with the Amtrak train. The operator and sole occupant, an 83-year old male, was pronounced dead on the scene.
There were no reported injuries among crew or passengers on the train, according to The Associated Press.
The crash is under investigation, but foul play is not suspected, according to the district attorney’s office.
The train’s passengers were transferred to another train and some Amtrak service later in the day was canceled, according to official tweets.
