An eight-alarm fire tore through a commercial building at 185 Corey Road in Brighton early Friday morning, injuring one firefighter.

Firefighters were called to the scene — a former music school, according to the Boston Globe — around 4:30 a.m. for fire showing from the building, the department said on Twitter at around 5 a.m. By then the blaze was four alarms.

Soon the fire went through the roof, covering the neighborhood in “heavy black smoke,” the department said. All firefighters were ordered from the building and from the roof.

By around 5:30 a.m., six alarms were called and fire Commissioner John Dempsey was called in to command. There was also zero visibility with the wind shifting, the department said.

The department also used drones to help place equipment.

As of around 8:30 a.m., the fire, which was then eight alarms, continued to burn. Brookline Fire Department was also on scene to help.

Mayor Michelle Wu visited the scene around 9:30 a.m.

As of around 11:20 a.m., there were still “hot spots” in the building, and fire investigators were on scene to work on determining a cause.

A nearby elementary school, the Driscoll School in Brookline, closed Friday due to air quality concerns resulting from the blaze.
