Transit police arrested a Mattapan man for allegedly stabbing two people at South Station Tuesday morning, according to a statement.

Around midnight, officers on patrol heard screams coming from the Red Line outbound platform.

Officers found a man and a woman, both 38 and from Boston, bleeding from apparent stab wounds, according to the statement. Police did not identify the victims.

Police say a man, later identified as 45-year-old Conroy Byfield of Mattapan, was standing in a “fighting stance,” holding a knife and facing the victims.

Officers told Byfield to drop the knife and move away from the victims, according to the statement. Police say he complied and was taken into custody
