Tony Sostre, 19, was an 11th-grade student at Brockton High, according to a statement from Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.

Officials on Monday identified the 19-year-old Brockton man who was killed in a single-car crash in the city Sunday night.

Tony Sostre, an 11th-grade student at Brockton High, was the driver and sole occupant of a 2004 Mercedes C240 that left the roadway and struck a telephone pole at 422 East St. around 9:27 p.m., according to a statement from the Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.

First responders found the mangled car resting against a tree, according to The Enterprise.

Sostre was freed from the car and taken to Brockton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the statement.

“Principal [Cynthia] Burns and her team worked in partnership with the district’s mobile crisis team to identify the student’s friends and classmates to offer grief counseling,” Jess Hodges, a spokeswoman for Brockton Public Schools, told The Boston Globe. “They will continue to provide support for as long as is needed. Our hearts are with the student’s loved ones as they cope with this terrible loss.”

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to the statement.
