State Police investigate fatal crash in Sumner Tunnel

The 24-year-old driver died at the scene. Two injured passengers, an 18-year-old woman and a 22-year old man, were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

State Police are investigating an early Sunday morning car crash in the Sumner Tunnel that killed a driver and injured two passengers, according to a statement.

At 3:20 a.m., troopers from the State Police-Tunnels Barracks responded to a single-car crash in the Sumner Tunnel on the ramp to Storrow Drive.

When the troopers arrived on the scene, they discovered three occupants in the vehicle, each with serious injuries, according to the statement.

Police say the 24-year-old driver, a man from Northampton, died at the scene. The passengers, an 18-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man, were transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries, according to officials.

The ramp was closed during the investigation and clean-up of the car.

The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police, with assistance from the State Police Crime Scene Services Section and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.

Troopers were also assisted at the scene by the Medical Examiner’s Office, Boston EMS, and Mass DOT.
