The woman shot by an ex-boyfriend in an attempted murder-suicide in Salem Monday night is “doing miraculously well.”
Lindsay Smith’s prognosis “is quite good,” according to a statement released by Robbie Doyle of Doyle Sailmakers and obtained by WBZ. Smith, 33, worked at Doyle and was outside of her workplace when she was shot and injured.
Smith had sought a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, Richard Lorman, 55, of Wilton, New Hampshire, who authorities say died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but that request was denied by a judge in New Hampshire. She had received a temporary restraining order in late September, saying that Lorman was threatening her life. However, a judge said on Oct. 20 that Smith’s allegations didn’t qualify as abuse.
In the statement, Doyle said Smith has full movement on her right side, but her left side motor skills were impacted due to trauma to the frontal lobe of her brain. Her vital signs are good, he said, and she’s breathing 80 percent or more on her own.
“In summary, her prognosis is quite good,” Doyle said. “The recovery will be lengthy with no time line. There are likely to be good and bad days but so far everything is improving daily.”
Meanwhile, the New Hampshire Supreme Court is reviewing why Smith’s request for a restraining order was denied, according to The Boston Globe.
After the shooting, New Hampshire Supreme Court Chief Justice Gordon J. MacDonald began an internal review of the case, which is planned to be finished next week, the newspaper reported.
New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu also commented on the incident.
“I immediately contacted the judicial branch and confirmed this matter is being reviewed to the fullest extent possible,” Sununu said in a statement obtained by the Globe.
