25-year-old killed in motorcycle crash identified as Middlesex corrections officer

Curtis Byner was pronounced dead at the scene of the Route 2 crash in Athol.

The 25-year-old Athol motorcyclist who was killed in a crash Wednesday afternoon has been identified as Curtis Byner by state police. He was a corrections officer with the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office.

Byner was driving eastbound on Route 2 in Athol at approximately 4 p.m. when he crashed and sustained serious injuries. Police responded to the scene shortly after, where he was pronounced dead.

“It is with deep regret and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Correction Officer Curtis Byner as a result of an off-duty accident,” the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office said Thursday on Facebook. “Please hold Officer Byner’s family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts during this difficult time.”

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
