A local man who attended Travis Scott’s Houston concert on Saturday recalled terrifying moments during the crowd surge.
In an interview with 7News Boston, Whitman resident Tyler Dezutter, 24, said he was “still at a loss for words” after experiencing the crowd surge that killed eight and injured several more.
“Everybody was starting to push and move forward, back and forth, side to side,” he told 7News. “It was starting to be like a cluster and everything.”
Dezutter retweeted two statements about the concert, one from headliner Travis Scott and the other from the Astroworld Festival account.

The pandemonium began almost immediately after Scott started his set. The Associated Press reported that as a timer counted down to the start, the crowd pushed forward. With a sold-out crowd of 50,000 in attendance,
“As soon as he jumped out on the stage, it was like an energy took over and everything went haywire,” concert-goer Niaara Goods told the AP. “All of a sudden, your ribs are being crushed. You have someone’s arm in your neck. You’re trying to breathe, but you can’t.”
The crowd surge — a documented phenomenon that has claimed lives throughout history — killed eight people and injured several more. Those killed range in ages from 14 to 27 with one age unknown, the New York Times reported, and a 10-year-old boy was confirmed injured, among others.
Authorities are investigating the events surrounding the deaths, and who could be culpable. Several lawsuits have already been filed against the festival, Scott, and artist Drake, who performed with Scott.
“It may well be that this tragedy is the result of unpredictable events, of circumstances coming together that couldn’t possibly have been avoided,” Judge Lina Hidalgo, Harris County’s top elected official, told the AP. “But until we determine that, I will ask the tough questions.”
