Girl seriously injured in horseback riding accident

GROVELAND — A teenage girl was seriously injured in a horseback riding accident at a private horse farm and riding school in town, according to a statement from local officials.

At approximately 6 p.m. Friday, Groveland police and fire responded to a report of a serious medical emergency at the facility on King Street.

Groveland firefighters arrived within minutes and found a 16-year-old girl who was unresponsive, according to the statement.

Officials say the teen had been riding a horse at the farm when it apparently spooked and rolled over, landing on top of her.

First responders immediately began to render aid and requested a medical helicopter for transport, according to the statement. The helicopter landed at the Pines Recreational baseball fields nearby.

Officials say the girl’s parents were immediately notified.

The girl was flown to a Boston hospital with serious injuries, according to the statement.

“I would like to thank all rescuers who responded to this serious incident, including Groveland police and fire, West Newbury fire, and Trinity medics,” fire Chief Robert Valentine said. “Everyone involved worked together to quickly render aid to the patient and get her on board the medical helicopter efficiently.”
