Student charged after fireworks erupt near high school football game

Fireworks erupted during a high school football game in Sudbury last Friday night, and now a student is facing charges.

Video from the incident shows the game between Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School and Fitchburg High School come to a sudden pause as the fireworks go off close to the field. No injuries were reported, and Lincoln-Sudbury ended up winning the game 44-9.

In a press release this Friday morning, Sudbury police said the student — who is a juvenile and therefore, by law, cannot be publicly identified — is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, and wanton destruction of property. Police said they conducted a search warrant Thursday at a Sudbury home and recovered evidence; they also said they believe the student is “the sole perpetrator of the incident.”

Due to age, the suspect can’t be charged with things like disturbing the peace, disturbing a school assembly, and possession of fireworks, according to Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix. He noted that the investigation into what happened is continuing.

Lincoln-Sudbury’s home game this week was rescheduled to Thursday, and just the two teams, the players’ parents, and cheerleaders were allowed to attend, according to WCVB. The team won again — 49-13 over Acton-Boxborough.
