Car falls 40 feet onto tracks after Boston crash; commuter rails delayed

One car fell approximately 40 feet onto the commuter rail tracks after colliding with another car at around 4:40 a.m. Wednesday morning in the South End, according to a tweet by the Boston Fire Department. Boston fire department and emergency services responded to the scene at Washington and Herald streets.

Four people were transported to hospitals by Boston Emergency Medical Services. Boston Police told the Boston Globe that the occupants of the vehicle did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Their location has not been revealed at this time. 

The MBTA commuter rail is experiencing delays this morning as police activity continues near South Station. Some lines are almost an hour behind schedule. Earlier in the morning, MBTA commuter rail tweeted that lines for Framingham/Worcester, Needham, Franklin and Providence/Stoughton trains would experience delays. 

All Providence/Stoughton and Franklin Line trains will bypass Back Bay, Ruggles and Hyde Park until police activity is cleared, the authority said. The MBTA recommended riders take the Orange Line instead. 

Update: “MBTA and Keolis crews removed the car from the tracks and have completed inspections of both the catenary and track infrastructure. All tracks are now open for service, though residual delays may continue,” Keolis, which operates the commuter rail system for the T, said in a statement.

The crash remains under investigation.
