Two kayakers who were out fishing Wednesday evening were rescued after their boat got stuck in the mud. Their kayak flipped over in Robbins Pond, located in Halifax, leaving the two men stranded in the mud up to their chest for two hours, 7News reported.
The kayakers called 911, according to 7News, but responders took a while to rescue the two, as the muddy conditions made it hard for them to locate the men. Several departments in the South Shore area responded and were present at the scene, including the Halifax fire and police department.
“We bumped something and he fell on me,” one of the kayakers told 7News. “The weight of it took us down, that was it.”
An airboat was used to rescue the two men stuck in the mud after the fire department unsuccessfully attempted to launch a boat, which could not push through the mud. Airboats are made to go over almost any type of terrain, Captain Jeff Cuozzo of the Halifax fire department told WCVB.
With a long wait time for rescue, the kayakers also had to deal with mosquitos.
“I’m not going to go in that canoe anytime soon,” the other kayaker said.
The two men did not need medical attention, according to 7News, and went home following the incident.
