Leading cyclist dies following crash during last lap of N.H. race

A bicyclist was far ahead of the pack during a race in New Hampshire when he suffered an apparent medical issue and died, according to race organizers.

Evan Barr-Beare, who worked at Brown University as a staff scientist and lived in Rhode Island, was about 45 seconds ahead in the Men’s 3/4 race during the 40th annual Concord Criterium when, during the last lap, a medical issue “resulted in a traumatic crash and his passing,” the Sunapee Racing Team said in an email that went out to the community. 

“Evan was having an incredible race, and for many of us, it would be the race of a lifetime,” the email said.

He was just 33, according to a tribute posted to the BikeWise Oxford Facebook page, which noted that Evan was involved with the Ohio shop for about 12 years. A native of the midwestern state, Barr-Beare had relocated to Rhode Island just a couple of years ago, the Sunapee Racing Team said.

“According to Evan’s family, bike racing was his passion and he died doing what he loved,” the email said. “For us, he died a champion. Please keep your thoughts and prayers with his family during this difficult time.”
