A 24-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man are dead following a head-on, wrong-way crash on Route 2 in Phillipston late Tuesday night, according to state police.
Just before 11 p.m., state troopers were notified of a wrong-way driver headed west on the eastbound side of Route 2. Minutes later, police were called to a head-on crash on the eastbound side, west of Exit 79 in Phillipston.
Authorities noted that Route 2 goes from a divided highway to single-lane, undivided highway in both directions in that area.
At the scene, a 24-year-old Athol woman who was driving a 2014 Chevy Sonic was found dead. The other vehicle, a 2018 Ford Escape, went off the left side of the road, over a guardrail, and down a 20- to 30-foot embankment. The vehicle then struck a tree and burst into flames.
The driver, a 26-year-old man from Westford, was also pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police. Authorities didn’t say which of the vehicles drove in the wrong direction. The identities of the victims have not been released.
The crash remains under investigation. All lanes of Route 2 were shut down while authorities investigated; the roadway reopened around 4:30 a.m.
