Officials identify woman who died in Boston Harbor boat crash on Saturday

Investigators identified the woman who died in an early morning boat crash in Boston Harbor on Saturday as Jeanica Julce, 27, of Somerville.

Around 3 a.m. on Saturday, eight people were thrown overboard when a center console boat crashed into a “day board marker,” a navigation aid, in Boston Harbor. Though seven people were rescued with non-life-threatening injuries, a 13-hour search commenced for the eighth boater. 

Massachusetts State Police recovered a body matching a description of the missing woman around 10 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Coast Guard. Boston Police Sergeant Detective John Boyle told The Boston Globe the body was transported to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

The large rescue effort was huge and involved the two local Coast Guard stations, Massachusetts state and environmental police, the Massport and Boston fire departments, the Boston Police Department, and Boston EMS.

“Through this cooperation, seven individuals were rescued, and my condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim,” said Coast Guard Capt. Kailie Benson in a statement. “We are grateful for the quick actions of Boston’s mariners, alongside state, local, and federal agencies.”

Coast Guard officials told WCVB that the 35-foot center console pleasure boat hit the day marker at a high speed in heavy fog. Bill Simpson, a local meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told the Globe clear skies and a visibility of 10 miles were the conditions recorded at Logan airport around the time the boat sank.

“I would like to take this moment to remind everyone to practice safe boating by wearing life jackets, operating at a safe speed, and considering the risk posed by the environment when taking to the water,” Benson said.

The boat was recovered and is being held at the Cohasset Police Department, according to WCVB, and the Boat and Recreational Vehicle Safety Bureau is reconstructing the crash.

Officials have not released details surrounding the circumstances of the crash, but an investigation by the Boston Police Homicide Detectives unit is ongoing. Anyone with relevant information is asked to call (617) 343-4470.
