Rescue crews search Connecticut river for 2 missing teens

AVON, Conn. (AP) — Rescue crews resumed searching Friday for two missing teenagers who were believed to have gone swimming in the Farmington River in the Avon area.

Police said 17-year-old Anthony Nagore and 15-year-old Lucas Brewer, both from Plainville, went swimming shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday at a spot on the river in Avon frequented by young people. Authorities said they found one of the teens’ vehicles near the swimming site, as well as their cellphones and some of their clothing along the river bank.

Their families reported them missing around 5 p.m. Thursday when they failed to return home, Capt. Keith Williams of state environmental conservation police said at a news conference Friday.

The Farmington River, and others rivers and streams in the region, are swollen and fast-moving because of recent heavy rains. Williams said the Army Corps of Engineers reduced flow from a nearby dam Friday morning to help the search efforts.

“It’s stressful. It’s very sad,” Williams said. “But we’re doing what we can. We’re doing our best. All of the agencies that are involved here are doing what they can to find these two individuals and bring closure to the family.”

Avon police said a local resident had warned the two teens about dangerous conditions in the river before they went swimming.

Several agencies were searching for the teens near the Avon-Canton line including state police, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and first responders from Avon and Burlington. The crews include divers and police dog teams. Authorities also were using a helicopter, drone and sonar.
