Everett man shot by police after barricading in home, advancing with ‘what was described as a sword’

The suspect, who has not been identified, is expected to survive his injuries.

An Everett man was shot and injured by police early Monday morning after he allegedly barricaded himself inside his apartment building, then charged at officers with a sword.

Authorities were called via 911 just after midnight to a Buckman Street apartment. There, they found out that a man who lived there had barricaded himself inside. A SWAT team, and more police officers, were called to the scene, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office in a press release.

The 45-year-old man then allegedly went outside the home and went at officers “in possession of what was described as a sword,” the release said.

“Officers deployed less than lethal force, in the form of a sponge round, that was ineffective,” according to the release. “An Everett Police Officer subsequently shot the suspect.”

The man was taken to a Boston hospital, and he is expected to live, authorities said.

His identity, as well as potential charges he could be facing, have not been released.

A spokesman for state police told Boston 25 that officers were on scene for about three hours, and that Buckman and Clark streets were closed during that time.
