“There was a struggle over a firearm that was located in the vehicle,” Boston Police Superintendent-at-Large Gregory Long said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.
During that struggle, one of the officers shot the driver with her service weapon, he said.
The driver, an adult man who has not been publicly identified, suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and was placed under arrest, according to Long. Three officers were also brought to nearby hospitals to be evaluated; he didn’t describe the nature of their injuries.
In an evening press release, Boston Police announced charges, and noted the incident was under investigation by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the Firearms Discharge Investigation Team.
The suspect, whose name will be released after booking, was charged with:
“A firearm was located at the scene, and there was body camera footage also on the scene,” Long said.
The man was reportedly driving the vehicle when police attempted the traffic stop; he was the only person inside, according to Long.
Citing the “very active investigation,” Long couldn’t give some of the details of the incident, including the type of vehicle the man was in and where the firearm allegedly was. He did say that the firearm allegedly in the vehicle was not fired.
