The 19-year-old Boston man who drowned Thursday while swimming off Castle Island has been identified.
Joao Alves Teixeira was reportedly swimming with his family members just after 1 p.m. Two of his relatives returned to shore, but Teixeira stayed in the water with his 20-year-old brother, according to state police.
“The pair was swimming approximately 150-200 yards from shore when the victim’s brother swam underwater, and when he re-surfaced, his brother was no longer in sight,” police said in a statement. “The brother then began to search for Mr. Teixeira and he himself began to struggle to stay afloat. DCR lifeguards entered the water, swam out, and rescued the brother.”
A rescue and recovery mission continued until around 7:25 p.m. when a Massachusetts State Police dive team found Teixeira in an area that reaches about 30 feet deep. He was brought to shore and pronounced dead.
