A white shark was spotted off the coast of Chatham around 2:45 p.m. on Sunday. The shark was seen by a spotter pilot off of North Beach Island, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

Another confirmed shark sighting was reported on the conservancy’s Sharktivity app around 4 p.m., about a quarter-mile offshore near North Monomoy Island. Sharktivity also reported a sighting around 12 p.m. on Sunday of a shark eating a seal about a hundred yards off of Nauset Beach.
Based on Sharktivity reports, in the last week, there have been seven shark sightings around Cape Cod and two sightings in the bay.
According to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, shark activity increases June through October when the region hits peak activity. The waters around the Cape and South shore are preferred feeding grounds for white sharks, the conservancy says on its website, who hunt seals in the shallow waters close to shore.
When shark sightings are reported near a beach, swimming is typically stopped, so make sure to keep an eye out for signage and listen to lifeguards. Here are some safety tips from the conservancy:
