30-year-old moped operator dies after collision with minivan in Forest Hills
State police say the moped operator ran a red light before crashing into the side of the minivan.
A moped operator died following a collision with a minivan in Boston’s Forest Hills neighborhood on Friday evening.Authorities believe it was the moped operator, 30-year-old Joseph Pielmeier, who caused the crash and said that no charges will be filed against the minivan’s driver.Around 6:45 p.m., the Tomos moped operated by Pielmeier allegedly ran a red light when headed northbound on South Street into the intersection with Arborway, according to a state police release. The moped then collided with a 2011 Toyota Sienna, which was headed eastbound and was in the intersection traveling toward New Washington Street. The van was said to have a green light. The moped hit the passenger-side door of the van, police said. Pielmeier, who had addresses in Virginia, Boston, and Somerville, was thrown off the bike and hit the ground; he wasn’t wearing a helmet. He was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died on Sunday, according to police.Inside the minivan, a 3-year-old girl, the driver’s daughter, had a bruised shoulder and was taken to Boston Children’s Hospital, police said.“Multiple witnesses interviewed by Troopers stated that the moped drove through the red light and that the Sienna had the green light,” state police said in the release. “Evidence suggests the moped was traveling between 30-40 mph at the time of the crash.”
