A local couple who met and got engaged at Fenway 50 years ago returned for their COVID-19 vaccines

Approximately 54 years after they met at a Red Sox game and 50 years after they got engaged at Fenway,  local couple Donna and Thomas Wall returned to the ballpark for another major life event.

The pair were among the thousands of Massachusetts residents who received their COVID-19 vaccine at Fenway Park, getting their second shot on Monday.

Thomas, originally from Dorchester, worked as an usher during the “Impossible Dream” season of 1967. That’s where he met Donna, from Cambridge, who was in the stands.

According to the couple’s daughter, Nicole Maynard, the Red Sox have always been extremely important to their family.

“The Red Sox have always been a big part of my family’s life,” Maynard said. “They went back there for their 35th wedding anniversary. And now they’re back this year getting vaccinated.”

After Maynard tweeted a photo of her parents, national press outlets like People magazine and ABC News came calling, which was a shock to the couple.

“My parents are so embarrassed,” Maynard said. ” They’re from Boston. They’re like, ‘It’s not like we created the vaccine, why do people care about us?’

“And I was like, ‘Listen, people need to hear good news right now, and this is a great story,'” Maynard continued. “But they’re over it.”
