Crash closes Route 1A in East Boston, power knocked out

Police responded to the motor vehicle crash in the area of Addison Street and McClellan Highway around 7:50 p.m., police said.

Route 1A in East Boston was shut down in both directions Wednesday night due to a crash involving life-threatening injuries, Boston police said.

Motorists should avoid the roadway, also known as William F. McClellan Highway, which will be closed “until further notice,” Boston police tweeted around 9 p.m.

Police responded to the motor vehicle crash in the area of Addison Street and McClellan Highway around 7:50 p.m., said Officer Kim Tavares, a department spokesperson.

No further information was available, she said.

WCVB-TV reported that the crash snapped a utility pole in half and knocked out power to the area.

Lauren Adams, a spokesperson for Eversource, confirmed the crash caused widespread power outages in the neighborhood.

An online map showed more than 1,500 customers were without power late Wednesday night.

The utility hoped to have power restored by midnight, Adams said.
