A 17-year-old boy from Natick was killed in a motor vehicle crash on I-93 in Canton late Saturday night, and a fundraiser has been created to help his family. While state police didn’t identify the victim in a press release, the online fundraiser and 7News have identified him as Giovanni “Gio” Taboh, a junior at Natick High School.Taboh was a passenger in the backseat of a 2012 Jeep Wrangler when the driver, another 17-year-old boy, reportedly “attempted to cross multiple lanes” to take Exit 2B southbound. The Jeep the collided with a 2011 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 28-year-old Boston woman, state police said. The Jeep, which had three other passengers, rolled over across the ramp and into an infield next to it. Taboh was reportedly ejected from the vehicle. All others involved were taken to nearby hospitals for nonlife-threatening injuries or observation, state police said.“Giovanni was a fun loving kid who interacted closely with his school mates, friends and family,” the fundraising page says. “His sense of humor was a feature which was constantly highlighted by his parents. He loved to travel to explore new horizons and he was a budding musician who was constantly creating music with astounding lyrics and beats.”Sarah Oliveira, Taboh’s girlfriend, said she wished there could’ve been more time. Dozens of people gathered outside Natick High School Sunday for a vigil, according to 7News.“Whenever he walked into a room … the room just lit up,” Oliveira said, describing his “big smile.”
So far, the fundraiser has taken in over $28,500 as of noon on Monday.
