Trooper helps deliver baby in vehicle stopped along I-95

The baby was born shortly after 7 a.m. on Sunday.

A state trooper can now add helping to deliver a baby to his list of on-the-job accomplishments.Around 7 a.m. on Sunday, Trooper Jordan Cavaco was on I-95 northbound in Canton when, as he drove toward Exit 12, he saw a vehicle in the left lane. The driver, a man, appeared to be trying to flag him down by flashing the high beams and hazard lights, according to a department press release.Cavaco guided the other driver to pull over near the I-93 and I-95 interchange, and when he got to the other vehicle, saw that the woman inside was going into labor. He called for EMS, and grabbed his medical bag and OBGYN kit, the release said.Cavaco helped deliver a baby girl. The baby and mom were conscious throughout that time. Other troopers also went to the scene to help. The baby’s airways were clear, and they wrapped the newborn up as they awaited EMS. The dad helped to keep the woman calm and warm throughout the process, according to the release.“Trooper Cavaco wished to express that he was very happy to have had the opportunity to assist the family with the delivery of their baby girl!” the release said.
