50 people win Massachusetts state lotto jackpot after record-breaking drawing
Dozens across Massachusetts picked all five numbers from the Mass Cash draw Sunday.
Fifty people across Massachusetts won the jackpot in a popular state lottery game Sunday, an all-time record.
The drawing was for Mass Cash, a nightly $1 game where players choose five numbers between 1 and 35. Match all five and you get the jackpot, which is usually $100,000. Sunday’s outcome was Mass Cash’s most prolific since the game began in 1991.
The result is not as shocking a coincidence as you might think. The draw was 3-9-15-21-27, each number exactly six apart. As Mass Lottery official Christian Teja pointed out to WCVB, those are the numbers you’ll land on if you run down the third column of the Mass Cash bet slip.
The lottery uses a formula to calculate lower prize amounts if sales for a drawing don’t exceed the total prizes won, so the lottery won’t be giving out $5 million across the commonwealth. Instead of $100,000, each of the 50 winners will claim $48,000.
Teja told WHDH that the previous one-day record was 34 winners.
