SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — Several homes were evacuated and a neighborhood was blocked off after a woman doing yard work found a live grenade on her lawn, authorities said.

The Rhode Island woman found the grenade late Sunday morning and immediately called authorities, Smithfield Deputy Chief Steve Quattrini said.

The Rhode Island State Bomb Squad responded to the scene, X-rayed the grenade and determined that it was live.

“Shrapnel, damage to the human body, could be deadly if you’re close enough,” Quattrini told WLNE-TV.

It was placed in a secure box and transported to a safe location for detonation.
