You can soon adopt the ‘wayward’ white duck that befriended geese on the Esplanade
Winter's coming, which means that the geese will likely migrate south soon.
If you’ve strolled along Boston’s Charles River Esplanade this summer and fall, you may have noticed the wayward white duck that has ingratiated herself among a flock of surprisingly accepting Canada geese.
But winter is coming, and that means it’s time for the geese to migrate south. Like a squad of camp friends at the final bonfire of the summer, the beloved duck—named Essie, after the esplanade—may soon lose touch with her adopted avian kin. The season is especially troublesome for the duck, as she’s a domestic species, not a wild one, and might not survive the winter outdoors.
Fortunately, Essie is looking for a new family. The Animal Rescue League of Boston collected her last week and will put her up for (human) adoption soon.

The ARL said that Essie is at their Brewster location, though she doesn’t seem to be listed online just yet. Those who want to welcome her into their own family can contact the rescue at arlboston.org.
