Water main break in Brookline closes roadway, state officials warn of water discoloration
The broken pipeline on Lee Street left the roadway closed to the public on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency crews in Brookline responded Thursday morning after a water main near Route 9 burst open, flooding the nearby street and leaving local residents with the possibility of water discoloration. The pipeline on Lee Street broke when a coupling let go, causing water to pool into the Brookline Reservoir and across the roadway, according to a release from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. The damaged pipeline, which has since been isolated, serves parts of Boston, Brookline, Milton, and Quincy, officials said. Brookline police tweeted videos of water gushing from the broken pipe and spurting into the air.

While water pressure continues to return to normal, Lee Street will remain closed to traffic and police said the reservoir will remain closed to the public.
Since the pipeline has been isolated, officials warned that neighbors could see possible water discoloration as a result of small traces of iron in the pipes.
“Please note that iron will stain light colored items in your laundry, especially when bleach is used,” the Water Resources Authority added. “Residents should check water clarity before washing white or lighter colored laundry during this period.”
