Alleged knife-wielding Winchester man shot and killed by police ID’d

Police reportedly responded to the man's apartment around 8:12 p.m. Monday.

The Winchester man shot and killed by police after allegedly brandishing knives at officers in his apartment Monday night has been identified.Thomas Celona, 35, was a resident of the Parkview Apartments on Swanton Street where police were sent around 8:12 p.m. after a security guard called 911 to report that a 35-year-old man had said there was “an issue” within his apartment, according to a news release from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office. When three Winchester officers arrived at the unit, they reportedly heard noise coming from inside, but noted that it didn’t look like anyone had tried to break in. After they “gained entry” into the apartment, the officers saw the man who had reported the issue holding two knives, according to authorities.“Police gave verbal commands for the man to drop the knives before a Taser was deployed twice, which was unsuccessful in subduing the man. When the man reportedly continued to approach the officers, while still in possession of the knives, a Winchester Police Officer fired his service weapon striking the man,” the release said. “First aid was rendered on scene and the man was transported to an area hospital where he later died.”The officers were brought to a nearby hospital as a precaution. The investigation is ongoing, and the involved officers are being placed on paid leave per department policy.
