Brockton police chief helps save the life of choking 3-month-old baby
“I'm so thrilled that we have a happy ending, and the parents and Grandmother are enjoying their precious little girl.”
Brockton Police Chief Manny Gomes is being credited with helping to save a 3-month-old baby’s life after she began choking Thursday morning. The baby’s mother made an urgent 911 call around 9 a.m., saying her daughter, Audrey, was choking, police said in a news release.A medical call was made to local firefighters, and police were also sent to the home, including Gomes, who was one of the first to arrive on scene.“When the grandmother handed me the child, the baby was unresponsive,” Gomes said in the release.Gomes used his training to immediately begin helping Audrey.“You drape the child in your arms face down,” he said. “And you give light blows in between the shoulder blades.”Audrey then began gasping for breath, and Gomes was able to clear her tiny airway.“There were tense moments,” Gomes said. “I’m so thrilled that we have a happy ending, and the parents and Grandmother are enjoying their precious little girl.”“I don’t know about any more urgent call than that. These are the moments you’ll never forget.”Juliette Leger, Audrey’s mom, didn’t realize it was the police chief who was one of the first to arrive. Audrey was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to return home with her mom on Friday, police said.Leger and Gomes were able to actually meet outside of Brockton Hospital Thursday night.“I’m so thankful that I still have my baby girl,” Leger said. “I could’ve been leaving this hospital without her, so I’m just very grateful. … I thank God, and I thank the Chief cause I don’t know what I would have done if I didn’t have my daughter.”
