The attempted detention of a Lynn man by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ended with authorities letting him go after protesters gathered in the area on Monday.
According to ICE authorities in a statement, officials saw Robelio Gonzalez-Constanan, who they say is a Guatemalan citizen, outside of his home in Lynn.
“Gonzalez-Constanan has been removed from the U.S. on three prior occasions and was convicted of illegal reentry after deportation in 2011,” ICE authorities said in statement.
Advocacy group Lynn United for Change noted that Gonzalez-Constanan was home at the time with his school-aged daughter when ICE attempted to detain him. One of his family members called the organization, mobilizing the group at the scene, according to WHDH.
Photos from the organization show multiple activists surrounding the home and vehicle.
“All we could do was mobilize, reach out to our friends in the community, our allies, show up and use our bodies to protect our community member … to try and stop the family from being broken apart for no reason,” Isaac Simon Hodes of the organization told WHDH.
Ultimately, ICE authorities could not detain Gonzalez-Constanan because doing so would have left his daughter by herself, the news station reported.
Instead, Gonzalez-Constanan received a notice to go to ICE’s Enforcement Removal Operations Boston Field Office, the agency’s statement said.
Blocking or trying to stop ICE officers during an attempted detention could result in federal charges, according to officials. It was unclear whether anyone was being charged.
