Divers find body of missing Maine canoeist in rural lake
DEAD RIVER TOWNSHIP, Maine (AP) — Authorities in Maine said a dive team recovered the body of a missing 31-year-old canoeist in the state’s rural interior on Tuesday.
Caitlin Giunta of York, Maine, was canoeing with two other people on Flagstaff Lake in northern Maine on Saturday when their canoe capsized, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife said. The group had been motoring across the lake back to a campsite when they encountered rough lake conditions and heavy wind, the agency said.
The inland fisheries department said the search for Giunta covered more than 4 miles and 350 acres of water. Game wardens worked with Maine State Police and the Maine Marine Patrol on the search.
