26-year-old Melrose woman killed in early morning I-95 crash
State police were called to the scene at 12:50 a.m.
A Melrose woman is dead, and two others injured, when the vehicle they were in went off the road, hit a guardrail, and then some trees along I-95 northbound in Boxford early Saturday.State police say they were to the portion of the highway near Exit 53A around 12:50 a.m. for a report of a crash. There, they found a 2009 Toyota Avalon that went off the right side of the highway. The driver, a 25-year-old woman from Derry, N.H., plus passenger Shana Fusco-Russell, 26, of Melrose, were both ejected from the vehicle, and had serious, life-threatening injuries, state police said. A 27-year-old Winthrop man received minor injuries in the crash. The vehicle caught on fire and was “fully engulfed” when authorities got to the scene; everyone was out of the vehicle.The driver was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital, while Fusco-Russell was first taken to Beverly Hospital, and then flown to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington. She was pronounced dead. The man was brought to Beverly Hospital.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle had been traveling at a high rate of speed in the left travel lane, when for reasons still under investigation, crossed all travel lanes, striking the guardrail and trees,” state police said.
Authorities are continuing to investigate what happened. The area of I-95 where the crash occurred was closed for a time while officials were on scene.
