Never forget: Here’s how you can virtually commemorate 9/11

Multiple organizations and communities are live streaming their tributes to victims of the terrorist attacks.

It’s been 19 years since almost 3,000 people were killed in the terrorist attacks at World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and on a plane that went down outside of Shanksville Pennsylvania.This year is extremely different than other 9/11 anniversaries, but despite the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still commemorations, albeit virtual.Gov. Charlie Baker was scheduled to take part in the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund’s Annual Commemoration, which began at 8:30 a.m., and is being streamed on the organization’s website.The USS Constitution also live streamed, and recorded, a commemoration aboard the ship.

Later in the day, the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighters Memorial Annual Ceremony is scheduled to begin streaming at 5 p.m. on the organization’s website.

Newton will live stream its own ceremony beginning at 6 p.m., according to The Boston Globe. It will appear on Vimeo. Just a few people will attend in person.

“The angst that surrounds us from today’s deadly pandemic somehow amplifies the horror of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, for me,” Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said in a statement obtained by the newspaper.

In Brookline, a ceremony will be livestreamed on the Brookline Interactive website beginning at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will include remembrance of eight Brookline residents. Brookline firefighter Peter Moyer’s brother, Manuel Del Valley Jr., also died in the attacks, and Moyer will speak, according to the Globe. Del Valley was a graduate of Brookline High School.
